The month of Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims, marked by fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection. Skipping the fast during this period can occur for a variety of reasons, intentional or unintentional. Understanding how to make up for missed fasts is essential to maintaining one's spiritual obligations and seeking closeness to Allah.
Valid Reasons for Missing Fasts
Islam provides certain benefits for individuals who are unable to fast for legitimate reasons, some of which are:
• Illness or medical conditions: If fasting would aggravate a health condition or delay recovery, it is permissible to skip the fast.
• Travel: Travelers experiencing hardship are permitted to postpone fasting.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Fasting may be postponed if it poses a risk to the mother or baby.
• Menstruation and postpartum bleeding: Women are exempt from fasting during these periods.
In such cases, individuals are required to make up the missed fasts as soon as possible. This should be done before the next Ramadan begins.
Making Up Missed Fasts
Those who missed a fast due to valid reasons must make up the missed fasts before the next Ramadan. The time can be adjusted within this period, with consecutive or non-consecutive days being allowed.
Delaying Makeup Fasts Without Excuse
If someone delays making up for a missed fast without a valid reason until the next Ramadan arrives, the scholars have different opinions:
• Majority view: As expiation, the person must make up the missed fasts, and in addition, feed a poor person for each day missed.
• Alternative view: It is sufficient to make up the missed fasts, without additional expiation.
Intentional Missed Fasts
Deliberately skipping a fast without a valid reason is considered a serious violation. The person must:
1. Repent sincerely: Seek forgiveness from Allah with true repentance and a firm intention not to repeat the act.
2. Make up for missed fasts: According to many scholars, the person is obligated to fast one day for each day missed.
Some scholars recommend performing additional good deeds, such as voluntary fasting and increasing acts of worship, as expiation for sins.
Kaffarah (Expiation) for Deliberate Breaking of Fasts
If one intentionally breaks the fast without a valid reason, the person is required to do the following:
1. Fast for 60 consecutive days: If that is not possible, alternative means of expiation may be considered, such as feeding sixty poor people.
Addressing Years of Missed Fasts
For those who have neglected fasting for years:
• Calculate the number of missed fasts: Calculate the number of days missed to the best of one's ability.
• Gradual make-up: Develop a consistent plan to make up for missed fasts, balancing personal capacity without creating unnecessary hardship.
• Seek forgiveness: Engage in sincere repentance and increase voluntary acts of worship.
Practical Tips for Making Up Missed Fasts
• Plan ahead: To ease physical challenges, schedule make-up fasts on shorter, cooler days if possible.
• Combine with Sunnah fasts: Combining makeup fasts with recommended fasting days such as Mondays and Thursdays can yield greater spiritual benefits.
• Maintain consistency: Set a regular routine to consistently complete missed tasks, even if they are infrequent.
Conclusion
If one is unable to fast during Ramadan due to valid reasons or negligence, prompt and sincere action is required to resolve the matter. By understanding one's obligations and seeking forgiveness, one can re-align with their spiritual duties and continue on the path of righteousness.
